My time at La Comunidad News was unlike any other internship that I have had. While most journalism internships help you learn how a newspaper or magazine is put together, by only involving interns on a superficial level, assigning them the mundane task and a lot of the “grunt work,” La Comunidad gave me the opportunity to be a major part of its publication. I was able to not only learn how a weekly newspaper is put together, but I got to see my name in print weekly.

The experience made me more comfortable using my Spanish language skills and also a lot more comfortable interviewing sources for my stories, both in English AND Spanish. I really feel that I was helping to inform the Latino community of different events and opportunities around Madison, but also helping impact and empower the community, which happens to be the mission and goal of La Comunidad News.

For anyone in Spanish, Communication and/or Journalism, I think that working with La Comunidad News is a wonderful way to get started right away interviewing, writing and helping the Latino community of Madison. If you’re looking for a uniquely different internship, that gives you a lot of responsibilities and “hands on” experience in the field, working with La Comunidad News is a great opportunity for you.
